We often get asked, “How do you come up with great buttermint flavors?” So, we’re starting a series of blog posts titled “The Story of a Buttermints Flavor” and let you know how a flavor and its caricature came to be. We are beginning with Patriotic Peppermint because it is a new flavor, and we’ll catch up on the other ones here as we can.
For Patriotic Peppermint, It started in June of 2018. In our discussions about what flavors we wanted to do, and which ones we could do with the financial constraints we had to stay within. We were looking for something that we could call patriotic, or somehow push for the 4th of July celebrations. Initially, the first idea was to take an existing flavor, peppermint, and color it and re-package it as Patriotic Peppermint.
We tried for two weeks to get it by July, but it didn’t happen. It turns out, that it takes a lot of $$ to get a new flavor off the ground in a short amount of time. So, as the time when on, the year of 2018 finished out, and here came February and March of 2019 and we didn’t have a definite “yes” or “no” of what we wanted to do. Everyone agreed that “Yes, Let’s do this Patriotic Peppermint thing and just re-style Peppermint as another flavor… ummmm..”
We had already begun creating a Flavor Caricature and had mostly decided that we wanted something to do with a military uniform.
I had a vision of a Cap and a rolled up parcel of the Declaration of Independence, We used it and some photos of them we found online to create a concept of where we wanted to go with it.
Now, I just had a vision for the flavor and the design, but I’m not the actual artist. The artist, Mona was the real genius for what we see below. She caught the vision I had set out and came up with this concept. Then she added her specialty to it, a voilà we had a winner.
For the flavor itself, she didn’t see it until we were in the middle of drawing up the hand sketches. Mona decided to experiment with the Peppermint flavor, and she added a hint of cream flavoring. Once we tried it, not only did we have a great caricature, but also a wonderful unique seasonal flavor, that we can use every summer. We thought about calling it Peppermint Cream or some variation, but decided to go with the original name Patriotic Peppermint, and go with the art we were mostly finished with by then anyway.
It took a few days to draw up Mona’s sketch (above) in Adobe Illustrator, create a label, and order the labels, but we finished just in the nick of time.
So, there you have it, our brief (probably long) story of how Patriotic Peppermint became one of our most delicious flavors of the year. And, just in time too! It will start shipping on June 24th, 2019, perfect arrival for the big day. You Can Order Here
